History
Archaeological evidence traces settlement of Tidy Island by aboriginal Floridians to about 500 B.C. Today this island in sheltered Sarasota Bay retains a coastal shell midden and sand burial mounds, testaments to its early inhabitants. Modern history dates from 1886 when Cornelius Thigpen settled the island. His house has been faithfully reconstructed and is now part of a museum complex that documents the island’s rich history. The name, “Tidy Island,” according to local lore, is related to the tides of Sarasota Bay. Early inhabitants also called it Tidey’s Island. Either way, the name stems from the fact that settlers could walk from the island to the mainland at low tide.
